Yesterday, when Woot announced the theme for this week, “Astronomy”, I was very excited. My last two printed shirts are all about space. So I really felt this theme was tailored for me. But there was a problem. When you think about space and astronomy, the first choice for shirt color will always be black, or navy. My last two printed shirts were black. If I choose to design once again with that color, and if it wins, I might be known as the artist that can only design on black shirts. I don’t want that, I can’t allow it. That’s why I tried to challenge myself and design a space related concept using a light colored shirt as my base. I still used black as one of the colors on my palette. But just as an element of the design itself, not as the thing that will dictate the whole concept.

I though of this concept since last derby, but for some reason, I wasn’t in the mood for crazy halftones that time. That’s why last week I submitted a very simple design. But with a theme like this I couldn’t let it pass again. I’ve always been fascinated by the array of Canada–France–Hawaii telescopes located near the summit of Mauna Kea mountain, on Hawaii’s Big Island. So I came up with a concept that incorporated one of these telescopes as one of the main pieces of my design. Other important elements are the layers of the sky, from the white clouds to the dark black void called space. Between those layers you’ll discover stars, planets, comets, nebulas, and the Moon. You’ll discover astronomy…
